Why are Hindu Epics important in India?

The Greatness

The great Epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana are the biggest historic sagas of our Indian Culture. They reflect the uniqueness of the social, cultural and philosophical picture of ancient India.

Besides religious significance , the great Epics of India showcase high moral values which are relevant even today.

These scriptures reveal how during that ancient age our India was the forerunner in the realms of spiritual knowledge and it’s evolution.

Indian literature is thought to be the earliest literature of the world. Literature during this time largely incorporated art. The depiction of these arts is very detailed including humans, scenery and much more.

Some of the epics such as the Mahabharata are the political high drama characterised by non-negotiable ethics, propriety and righteousness. The dramatic aspects of these scriptures realistically depict the prevailing socio – political milieu of the time . Anyone interested to look at India of that time can use these scriptures as windows .

To have a holistic view of the idea of India we will have to do away with the prejudices and preconceived notions of the present day India. India as a whole cannot be understood without taking these scriptures into account.
